The mission of Capistrano Unified School District School Counselors is to provide a comprehensive counseling program that supports the whole child. School Counselors will focus on the needs, interests and issues related to social-emotional, academic, and college/career development of all students through a multi-tiered system of support. School Counselors will advocate, collaborate and facilitate actions that promote a positive school climate, provide an opportunity for all students to access their education and achieve personal and academic success to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world.

The School Counseling Program strives to provide opportunities so that every student will acquire the social-emotional, academic, and career skills to reach their fullest educational potential and successfully manage their lives as healthy, responsible, competent and productive citizens who respect themselves and others.

Hello Oso Grande Grizzlies!
 
My name is Liz Sholly and this is my 6th year as OGES's school counselor. I am here to support all students in their social-emotional, academic and college/career growth. School counseling supports children's skill development in areas like managing their emotions, communicating their needs, building self-esteem, improving their problem-solving abilities, and more. I am also here to help students develop coping skills to manage things like academic stress, peer conflict, significant life events such as losing a loved one (pets included), coping with family changes or moving.
 
Some of the services I provide include:
-Classroom Second Step Lessons in TK-5th 
-Short-term Individual Counseling
-Short-term Group Counseling
-Crisis Intervention
-Conflict Mediation
-Lunch Bunches and Workshops
-Positive Behavior Support
-Resouces and Referrals
 
To participate in counseling services, students can be referred by their parent(s), teachers/staff members or can self-refer.

Next is to work to fill your "toolbox" of coping skills for dealing with different feelings in different types of situations. Talk about what tool help you and model them when you are in situations where you feel frustrated, angry, overwhelemd, or sad.

SECOND STEP

The Second Step program is a social-emotional learning curriculum delivered via classroom guidance lessons by the counselor to all students. Second Step is designed to promote skills and attitudes that increase students' success in school, help them get along with others, and create a positive school climate in order to prevent school violence and bullying.
 
Second Step lessons include:
  • Listening & Focusing Attention
  • Respect, Empathy, & Compassion
  • Identifying Feelings 
  • Emotion Management & Calming Down
  • Problem Solving 
 
 
By logging in to the Second Step website (secondstep.org), you will get to access the information and materials used in the lessons that your student(s) receive. Familiarize yourself with the language and key concepts so that you can reinforcing these important and essential life skills with your children.
