Emotion Management
The first step in teaching your child emotion management skills is to build their emotion vocabulary. It can help to have some visuals around to have these conversations. 
 
Next is to work to fill your "toolbox" of coping skills for dealing with different feelings in different types of situations. Talk about what tool help you and model them when you are in situations where you feel frustrated, angry, overwhelemd, or sad.

Anxiety
UCLA Center for Child Anxiety Resilience Education and Support is chock full of excellent resources for families to understand and support their child who may be struggling with anxiety. SECOND STEP

The Second Step program is a social-emotional learning curriculum delivered via classroom guidance lessons by the counselor to all students. Second Step is designed to promote skills and attitudes that increase students' success in school, help them get along with others, and create a positive school climate in order to prevent school violence and bullying.
 
What is social-emotional learning?
  • Recognizing emotions in oneself and others 
  • Managing strong emotions
  • Having empathy for others
  • Controlling impulses
  • Communicating clearly and assertively 
  • Maintaining cooperative relationships
  • Making responsible decisions 
  • Solving problems effectively
 
Second Step lessons for elementary grades include:
  • Listening & Focusing Attention
  • Respect, Empathy, & Compassion
  • Identifying Feelings 
  • Emotion Management & Calming Down
  • Problem Solving 
By logging in to the Second Step website (secondstep.org), you will get to access the information and materials used in the lessons that your student(s) receive at least 6 times per year! Familiarize yourself with the language and key concepts so that you can reinforce these important and essential life skills with your children.
